Meiyan was raised in Jilin, China before attending Tsinghua University in Beijing as an undergraduate. She did her PhD training in the Klionsky Lab at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she studied autophagy. She is broadly interested in organelle biology, in particular, molecular mechanisms of how the formation of different organelles are controlled. Her current focus is on the initiation and regulation of clathrin-mediated endocytosis in mammalian cells.
